Gikwang was chosen as the light effects for the first half of the play, so while the second half started, he was able to take a seat by the sides with the other students and watch. Being a volunteer for the school play gets you free pass through the backstage and the auditorium, free ticket, too. But he has to keep a careful watch in case his job gets messed up by accidents, by pure misstep that can get him blamed until he graduates.
Throughout the second half of the play, two students that sit behind him were teasing the play. They must be first years. Gikwang would think. First year students here never know the traditional. They don’t know respect at all.
When he simply can’t stand their loud chattering and bickering, Gikwang turned around and glared at them through his spectacles. “Shut it.” He sighs.
The first years stare at him as he turns back around, glad that they obeyed. But it didn’t last long, the peacefulness. Just when IU got to the singing part on stage, the first years started talking again. Gikwang rolls his eyes. He really dislikes it when people don’t show respect, when they pretend that everything around them is not important to them, not something that they should need to take part of.
This society is a failure. People are all selfish. Gikwang thought. He can’t stand it. What’s the use of democracy if people indulgence it? Shaking his head, he leaves his seat and heads for the backstage. It’s almost ending.
It has gotten to the scene where IU(Belle) and Yoseob(The prince) dances in the room, surrounded by all the other characters.
Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast!
Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the beast!
Gikwang hears the students sing, he watches everyone hold their hands and takes a bow for another successful year of the famous play, or showcase you can call it. Suddenly, he catches a glimpse of IU tripping into Yang Yoseob’s arms. It was weird, but the action caused loud wolf whistles from the audience.
No one is ever going to let go of that scene again, when he wraps an arm around her, lightly getting her back on her feet.
Having no interest and knowing that this will be the only thing they’ll be talking about in the backstage, Gikwang heads off to the opposite way of where he was going. The stage slowly fades behind, along with the loud applause with each step he takes. Out and out and out.
________________________________________
It was true, on the Monday of the last showcase; IU’s accidental fall has made it to the headlines of the school’s weekly paper. Gikwang doesn’t care at all, he doesn’t have the heart for it when after the play—another more important thing is coming up. The student council president election.
He has been anticipating since the start of the new semester, when he was asked to run the election. He felt respected, finally by his classmates. And noticed, too. He was never noticed. Not when he was the only one that got an A+ in physics, not when his body started growing stronger, allowing him to have a fit body not many guys have in his class. He’s a nobody, and through the election, everyone in the school will know him.
“Mr. Lee, a moment please?” His teacher calls him to the front of the classroom just after the bell has rung.
“Yes?” Gikwang replies politely.
“I think we should let Yang Yoseob get prepared for the student body council election.” The teacher tells him. Gikwang’s eyes widen.
“But…I thought I was the one…?”
“Well, Yoseob has a higher chance of getting elected, with him acting successfully in the school play as a bonus.” His teacher explains her way of thinking. “You can always support him with your thoughts.”
“Like a pacemaker to Yoseob?” Gikwang grits his teeth.
“Some things are not always in our will.” She gathers her books and walks out of the classroom to the next class. “The next class is about to start.”
Is being popular that important? Gikwang calls out in his heart. He follows the teacher’s footsteps and walks out of the classroom tiredly while dragging his body behind him, not wanting to care about anything anymore.
A girl bumps into him, and she slips, but steadies herself just in time. “You can still run for the election you know.”
Gikwang steps dead in his tracks. “How?”
"I am here to tell you that there is another way. It’s not for everyone. It’s not the only way. It’s not the easier way. Actually, it is more likely to be the harder way. But I guarantee you it is the best way. It is simply this – follow your dreams." She places a hand on his shoulder, turning him around to face her. It’s IU.
“Great, like that’s going to help.” He mutters.
“Hm.” She shrugs and slips into Gikwang’s seat in the classroom. And with her eyebrow raised, she smiled at him.

It
was nearing the end of school, and Yoseob was anticipating the school play in
another few hours. No. He thought. It’s more than anticipation, its uneasiness.
It’s his first time to act and sing on stage, in front of so many people.
School
plays in Yoseob’s school has always been a popular event to look forward to,
and only the students who possess a good reputation or skill can sign up.
Everyone knows their own limits, but still—there are students who don’t know
anything and sign up to audition. Usually, their aftermath of trying out is not
so good looking. They would also get picked on, for overestimating themselves.
Now,
don’t get Yoseob starting on how he—a normal student got into the school play.
It was an accident, yet he doesn’t regret a thing. He loves singing, despite
his feminine outer appearance. He’s a total different person when he simply
stands on stage. He turns into a man (it’s not like he’s not one already), he
becomes confident and passionate. Like a beast. And that’s how he got noticed,
by one big mouth girl who was the school paper’s main editor. He still
remembers the surprised expression on her face. He understands. How can such a
low class people like him sing like that?
“You’re
awesome, Yang Yoseob.” She shakes her head, “tsk. Tsk. Tsk.”
“Huh?”
He replies.
“I’m
signing you up for the school play.” She pinches his cheeks. “You’re perfect
for any role. Yes, including female roles.” And she laughs while walking away.
For a moment, he thought she was joking, but when the next day he saw that the
main director for the school play come to pull him to rehearsals, he couldn’t
believe his luck.
And
now, after a whole two months since rehearsals for the school play has started,
Yoseob’s reputation and popularity in school has raised fast. He started having
lots of guy friends who treat him like one of them, like a buddy. It’s tedious,
the jokes and games the other guys do, but he’s starting to adapt to them after
their endless tries for him to join them. It’s fun, laughing with each other
and Yoseob loved that.
He’s
popular, he can’t believe it, and soon he’s going to be on stage with the
school’s eye candy IU. It’s not a surprise she has gotten to role of the main
girl. Yoseob has seen her in rehearsals (well of course, they are acting as
lovers), and her singing is really well. Her voice is as mysterious as her
personality, but totally intriguing. She catches people’s attention easily. He
feels like her sidekick instead of the main lead.
“What
are you thinking Yoseob?” One of his friends, Jaehyun had come, swinging an arm
around Yoseob’s shoulders.
“About
the play.”
His
friend grins. “You’re going to do well, bro.”
“Come
on, rehearse with me!” Yoseob suggests.
“What?”
Jaehyun exclaims.
“You
be IU’s role, Belle. Come on, it’s not like nobody knows Beauty and The Beast.”
Jaehyun
groans. “We’re going to be watching Beauty and The Beast for the next hour?”
“You
didn’t know?” And Jaehyun shakes his head. “Well you know now. Come on Beauty,
let’s rehearse.” Yoseob laughs loudly, waving for his other classmates to join
their small rehearsal play.
By
the time it was almost to the opening for the play, Yoseob feels famished. He
hadn’t eaten anything other than a few pieces of gum (not that you can eat it
anyway). He stands awkwardly in the middle of the busy backstage. The student
crew is revising everything again, doing the last minute checkup in case of any
accidents.
IU
sits on one of the seats, her legs crossed in an elegant way. Her dark brown
hair tied into a bun with a blue hair band, just like the girl Belle in Beauty
and The Beast. She wears a ragged maiden dress, with a blue apron, matching with
the blue hair band.
“Hey.”
Yoseob decides to talk to her.
“Hi.”
She replies, smiling politely.
“I’m
quite nervous, are you?” He asks.
“I
see.” She laughs.
“Oh.
So you’ve perceived.” Yoseob rubs the back of his head lightly.
“Seven
more minutes.” A student with a clipboard shouts to the whole student body
crew. Seven more minutes, that’s 420 seconds more until the opening. Yoseob
takes deep long breaths, trying to fan out the nervousness and the butterflies
in his stomach.
IU
laughs. “It’s conspicuous. I didn’t perceive it. It shows right on your face,
your anxiety.” She stands up from the chair and grips onto Yoseob’s bare
shoulder.
“Here now. Oh, don’t do that.” IU
tries to clean an invisible wound on Yoseob’s shoulder with an invisible rag. She’s being
Belle Yoseob thought. Immediately, he growls at her. “Just…hold
still.” She touches the rag to the wound and Yoseob roars in pain.
“That hurts!” Yoseob cries.
“If you’d hold still, it wouldn’t
hurt as much.” She says in counterpoint.
“Well if you hadn’t run away, this
wouldn’t have happened!”
“Well if you hadn’t frightened me, I
wouldn’t have run away!” IU protests. Yoseob opens his mouth to respond, but
has to stop and think of a good line.
“Well you shouldn’t have been in the
West Wing!”
“Well you should learn to control
your temper!” IU exclaims. Yoseob raises his hand to bring out another point,
but finds he has none, so he bows his head down again. IU moves the rag closer
to the wound. “Now hold still. This may sting a little.” Yoseob gives a
surprising grunt, and then grits his teeth as the rag is applied. IU speaks
tenderly. “By the way, thank you for saving my life.” She smiles.
“That was good.” Yoseob grins.
“Now let’s all do well on stage alright?”
The main director walks towards the two main with an enthusiastic grin spreading
across half of her face. Everyone starts gathering and gives each other a
thumbs up.
“One more minute!” The clipboard girl
shouts. Quickly, everyone gets into position for this play.
Then the familiar voice of the spoken
parts throughout the whole act starts introducing the whole synopsis and where
it all began…

what she said to him.
"I am here to tell you that there is another way. It’s not for

IU, Lee Gikwang, Yang Yoseob
▬IU is the
school’s eye candy. She is many students’ dream to become popular, to become
pretty. She’s a mysterious girl, she doesn’t talk much, and she avoids crowded
places in school. But she’s always there, walking around with her lips tightly
pursed. Maybe it’s because she’s secretive and concealed that she catches
people’s attention. Throughout the school, although no one knows much about
her, but they secretly respect her. Most important of all, she has the ability
to make someone listen to her, bringing them back to reality, back on their feet.
But she’s not sure…if that ability’s a good thing or not?
▬Gikwang has
always been a little distant from everyone, he doesn’t like the way teenagers
think, he’s always more mature than the rest of them, and he has a dream to
become a dictator because of his way of thinking. But when he meets IU
accidentally, and the words she tells him inspired—no, intrigued him to become
popular. He starts changing; he starts socializing, starts being someone he’s
not. He becomes a popularity whore…sensitive with what people think of him, of
what they say. But he’s doing all this to stand next to her, to thank her
truly, and to ask for her love.
▬Yoseob was
always told he was too cute, too girly, but they haven’t seen his passionate
singing and strong voice. Because of his voice, he takes big and swift steps up
to the top of the school pyramid. Once he’s at the top, many people pair him
and IU up. He doesn’t understand why, they are two different people, but as
time passes, he starts falling for her. But he’s not sure if he’s falling for
the real her? Or the ‘her’ people keeping telling him about?
